Road Maintenance Statistics

New research conducted by the vehicle checking company, Motorscan has revealed the areas in England with the worst roads, based on the average percentage of roads requiring maintenance between 2018 and 2023. 

The study analysed data from the Department for Transport, which showed historical road condition statistics for every English local authority. It was revealed that 24.6% of the minor roads in South-end-on-Sea required maintenance between 2018 and 2023, the highest of any area in England. This, along with the fact that 15.6% of the A-roads in the area required maintenance in the same period, means that Southend-on-Sea statistically has the worst roads in England. The Derbyshire area comes in second place on the list. Between 2018 and 2023, 14.7% of the A-roads here were judged to require maintenance on average, and in the same period, 21.2% of the B and C were also found to need maintenance. Coming in third place was the London Borough of Hackney. Although the percentage of B and C roads requiring maintenance was significantly lower than other entries at just 9%, 16% of the area’s A-roads required maintained on average between 2018 and 2023, giving it the third-place position. The local authority for the city of Derby comes in fourth place on the list. In this area, 9.7% of the A-roads required maintenance between 2018 and 2023. 14% of the area’ s minor roads also needed attention. Completing the top five is the London Borough of Newham. In this area 12.3% of the A-roads were seen to require maintenance between 2018 and 2023, followed by 11.4% of its minor roads
