The Most Common Causes of Accidents Over the Past Decade

Posted in General News on Friday, March 15th, 2024

New research conducted by Howden Insurance has revealed the most common causes of road collisions in the UK over the past ten years. The company looked at data released by the Office of National Statistics and found that driver error has been the the most common reason. On average 67.26% of all reported road accidents each year are a result of driver error. In London this figure rises to 74.24%. Many of these accidents happen because drivers have failed to observe the traffic properly at roundabouts and junctions. Driver behavioural  issues and a lack of experience were cited as the cause of 23.61% of all accidents each year on average. Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Howden Insurance said: “This data shows that the top causes of road accidents in the UK vary a lot, but in most cases, they are due to human error. It’s interesting to see just how many more collisions happen due to human error compared to any other cause, showing that you can always be at risk from other drivers on the road and not just yourself, so it’s important to maintain a good insurance plan.”
