MOT Tests Could Be Scrapped

In an effort to tackle the cost-of-living crisis the government has proposed putting an end to MOT tests and replacing them with a vehicle check every two years. This could save drivers more than £55 per year. Following the announcement there have been calls from the labour party and road safety organisations not to go ahead with the plans because of the possibility for there to be more unsafe cars on the road. RAC’s Head of Road Policy Nicholas Lyes said: “The purpose of an MOT is to ensure vehicles meet a basic level of safety for driving on our roads. Shifting it from annually to every two years would see a dramatic increase in the number of unroadworthy vehicles and could make our roads far less safe.”

Rarely does a vehicle NOT need something fixed or replaced. This is one of their more stupid ideas which will not save money in the long run.

This will be a big mistake, saving up to £55 per year is it worth it. This will lead to more polluting and dangerous vehicles on our roads

Not everyone has a car, this is not likely to help those without one because they cannot afford one on top of rising food and fuel costs. looks like another bung for government supporters. Nothing to do with helping the disadvantaged Also mote dodgy motors on the road will increase *Accident rates* and hence more pressure on emergency services and A&E. So much for *Save the NHS*

I do not agree with this stance at all. There are too many unsafe cars on the road today. With too many accidents as it is. Is life so unimportant we need to see less unsafe cars on the road. Motorways and roads are becoming less and less safe

You've got to be kidding me. Are the government stupid? I don't want to be on the road with more unsafe cars. People abuse the MOT now, so this is only going to make it worse. Senario: Car with unsafe tyres, suspension, wheel bearings etc. On motorway needs to brake quickly, not going to happen. Hits me up the rear sending me and possibly my daughters into an accident potentially killing all of us and possibly other drivers. Government needs to get a grip as this is going to result in a ridiculous amount of car failures while on the road.

Possibly MOTs could be abolished where a vehicle has a valid OEM Approved Service whilst it is under warranty. .........ie where warranty is longer than 3 years provided it is dealer serviced. It doesn't help owners of older cars, but they probably do need annual tests, particularly for safety-related wear such as tyres, brakes, and emissions.

I agree with the RAC there are enough car on our roads with no MOT, INSURANCE, BAND DRIVERS, without adding to the issue of checking. I'd rather the money used to improve our road conditions, what the government promises is a drop in ocean's to what is needed. I would not ride a bicycle or motorbike on the roads in the condition they are today. It is a total embarrassment when you have visitors coming to this country and their memories are the state of our roads.

I agree with Nicholas Lyes and the RAC - a vehicle can deteriorate a lot in 6 months let alone 2 years eg. front wheel toe-in leading to scrubbed tyres. This is another gimmick from an out of ideas government. All for £55 a year.

The mot test has gradually become more stringent and having seen the state of some vehicles it has become a necessary evil! How many times has everyone of us had a nasty shock at mot time? I try to make sure that all the vehicles in my family come up to mot standard or better as it is not just the safety of our own family but other road users. I think it would be a step in ghe wrong direction rather it would be better to think of other areas to help us meet the spiraling cost of living

This is a very small saving compared to the dramatic increase in fuel price. I notice the chancellors 5p a litre reduction has already been overtaken in fuel going up yet again. Our roads are generally very busy and on the whole poorly maintained. This can only lead to more dangerous vehicles posing a risk to everyone else. Really stupid idea, why not take the VAT off of electricity and gas, you know, those luxury items we all waste!!

It is a totally mad idea, however there needs to be more inspections on mot stations as too many vehicles pass that shouldn’t. It’s simple things like registration plates, window tinting, and much more. Then you’ve got the people who don’t care who drive without mot’s , insurance or license. Crazy world in crazy times

I am soory to say I agree with the RAC. Opposite me is an Electrician with a medium sized Renault Van. Being able to check the vehicle has a current MOT and the history enabled me to check this vehicle and found that every year the vehicle had advisories. Not one was corrected as the following year the Van failed on the advisories from the previous year. These were often tyres lights and steering. and brakes. Bearing in mind he often carried cable drums etc it was somewhat disarming. Unfortunately with Covid police attention to such breaches was somewhat non existent. Surely if one can afford a car then the MOT is the least of the costs. The person mentioned above managed to buy a later model car from his Audi (11 plate) to a Kia Sportage. ( 14 plate). Being a retired police officer, it was amazing the number of vehicles on the road without a current MOT. Yes times are difficult but a motor vehicle is a lethal weapon even when properly maintained.
