Methods for Deterring Car Thieves Changing

Posted in General News on Wednesday, May 24th, 2023

A tried and tested piece of motoring equipment, the steering wheel lock, is becoming more widely used again because cases of car thieves bypassing modern vehicle security systems are rising. Car thieves have become adept at using relay systems and electric scanners to gain access and start car engines. However, the steering wheel lock is now seen as a greater deterrent for thieves as it is far more time consuming to disable.

According to the Office for National Statistics more than 72,000 vehicles were reported stolen between September 2021 and September 2022. This is a 29% rise. The figures also revealed that there was a 14% increase in vehicle related crime over the same period, this includes stealing belongings from vehicles. A technique referred to as smash and grab is used on older vehicles, whereas modern cars fall victim to gangs taking advantage of keyless technology. Clive Wain, Head of Police Liaison at the car security firm, Tracker, said: “Criminals continue to find ways around new security technology, which is why we always encourage motorists to use traditional security deterrents such as crook locks and wheel clamps to deter the criminals and protect their vehicles.”
