Driving Mobility to work with DMUK

Posted in General News on Thursday, March 24th, 2022

To strengthen guidance and information for drivers with disabilities, Driving Mobility, a charity operating driving assessment centres nationally, will be supporting more closely relevant activities of the charity Disabled Motoring UK (DMUK).

Driving Mobility is supported by The Department for Transport and provides a range of services including ‘fitness to drive’ assessments from its nationwide centres. Led by Occupational Therapists and Approved Driving Instructors, these services strive to facilitate personal mobility and driving independence for clients mostly signposted from the DVLA, Motability, Police and the NHS. As an established charity regarded by many as ‘the national voice of assisted driving and independence’, Driving Mobility felt it appropriate to work with DMUK with a view to enhancing awareness of both charity’s activities for the benefit of drivers with a disability.  Following scoping meetings both charities have agreed to work more closely together so that relevant information and guidance can be shared to help a wider audience.

With foundations dating back to 1922, Disabled Motoring UK is the charity which supports disabled drivers, passengers and Blue Badge holders. It works with government and businesses across the UK in order to improve parking, refuelling, and access provision for disabled people, so that they can access the goods and services that they need.

Edward Trewhella, CEO, Driving Mobility, commented, “It was a natural progression for us to start working with DMUK and signposting their members to services of relevance. There are certainly synergies between us and jointly striving to achieve the best driving opportunities for all, and to maximise inclusion is something that we welcome. Ensuring equality in terms of personal mobility is, we believe, more vital than ever before, especially when you consider mental health and well-being. We think it is right at this time to be raising awareness of DMUK membership benefits to our client base.”

Graham Footer, CEO of DMUK adds, “I concur with Edward that by supporting one another we now have the opportunity to broaden awareness of our respective services and initiatives. We have great respect for Driving Mobility and its enabling approach to drivers with disabilities. This new understanding represents an exciting development in the area of adapted driving and we look forward to achieving significant results in the future.”

Hello - great magazine and article. I had an amputation when I was 68. I do not receive PIP. I have just self funded refresher driving lessons ( I am a right leg above the knee amputee) and a driving assessment which I am pleased to say I passed. Due to my age and no PIP I do not qualify for Motability....... Is there any campaign going or lobying to see if the age criteria can be raised / refined. It will not benefit me, but I feel it needs examination. I look forward to hearing further. Best regards Ann Griffiths.

Great news. I hope the combined strength of both groups and the involvement of the Dept of Transport can encourage the DVLA to allow those on standard mobility PIP with 50% road tax discount to renew their road tax online. At present to ensure we can continue to drive the only way is to pay in full online, submit the paperwork and covering explanatory letter and wait weeks for the 50% rebate. I for one have a very stretched budget and this method, although avoids me being off road if I just send a cheque for 50% of the tax - iOS difficult. Please can you raise this subject as I know I’m not alone with this problem. Many thanks
