Northern Ireland MOT Backlog Continues
Posted in General News on Tuesday, January 18th, 2022
MOT centres across Northern Ireland are continuing to suffer from backlogs because testing has been suspended several times in the past two years. Drivers are continuing to face significantly long waits when they are trying to book their MOT and many MOT certificates have expired during this time. The Department for Infrastructure states that it does not currently hold information on the waiting times for tests “given that this position changes on a regular basis.” However, when BBC News NI logged on to the booking system last Friday, it was discovered that most drivers are facing a three-month delay.
Due to the high demand for MOT services drivers are advised to book the earliest test possible. If this happens to be after the MOT certificate has expired the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) will consult with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to make them aware of the issue. The PSNI has issued guidance saying that drivers will not be fined if their vehicle is roadworthy, insured, has not been registered SORN, and the driver can prove that an MOT test has been scheduled for a later date.
