Euro NCAP Announces Safest Cars of 2021

Posted in General News on Thursday, January 6th, 2022

The vehicle safety testing body, Euro NCAP has announced its safest cars of 2021. Euro NCAP tested 33 new cars last year. Of the cars tested an impressive 22 of them achieved the highest 5-star rating. However, some models received no stars at all.

Euro NCAP only awards best-in-class titles to models which receive a 5-star rating and at least three cars must have been tested in a given category for a best-in-class title to be awarded. The Skoda Fabia was awarded this accolade in the small family car class. For the small MPV class it was the Toyota Yaris Cross which came out on top, while the latest edition of the Volkswagen Caddy came in second place. Electric vehicles (EVs) dominated the executive class with the Mercedes EQ5 holding the top spot and the Polestar 2 coming in second.

Moving on to the small off-road class the new Nissan Qashqai secured the top spot followed by the Volkswagen ID.4. Finishing off with the large off-road section, the Skoda Enyaq iV was awarded best-in-class and the BMW iX came in second. Dr Michel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP Secretary General, said “Last year was a tough one for the car industry: a shortage of parts, semiconductors in particular, was the sting in the tail of the Covid crisis, affecting development timelines, production and sales. Still, we saw quite a number of new car models coming to the market, many of them electric or hybrid, and many of them achieving five-star ratings despite the demanding requirements. Well done to the winners as well as to the runners-up, some of which were very close contenders for the top slot in their respective categories.”

“Last year was a tough one for the car industry: a shortage of parts, semiconductors in particular, was the sting in the tail of the Covid crisis, affecting development timelines, production and sales “ Don’t look like this year is going to be any better, how about making the cars you already got on order before introducing new ones.
