Road Safety Week

Posted in General News on Tuesday, November 16th, 2021

This week is Road Safety Week (15th – 21st November) and we are supporting Brake in their endeavours to highlight road safety heroes. This year’s theme celebrates the heroic work of road safety professionals, and they want to encourage everyone to play their part in making road journeys safer for everyone.

In the UK, on average, somebody is killed or seriously injured on a road every 20 minutes. Road crashes are tragic events, and death and life-changing injuries have a devastating effect on families and communities, as well as the immeasurable cost of misery inflicted on those injured and bereaved. Also exposure to air pollution, including traffic emissions is seriously damaging the nation's health and is linked to many illnesses and can reduce life expectancy.

The good news is that death and serious injury from road collisions and pollution are preventable, if people who design, build, and use roads all share responsibility for road safety. This is why this year they are celebrating the ‘Road Safety Heroes’ that help achieve this. Heroes include school crossing patrols, roads policing officers, road designers and highways engineers, fire and rescue services, ambulance services and medical staff in hospitals.
