Highways England Summer Tyre Checks Campaign

Posted in General News on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021

Highways England has launched a campaign to make sure motorists check their tyre pressures before embarking on a long journey this summer. One in five motorway breakdowns are caused by tyre issues and you are more likely to be involved in a breakdown if your tyres are incorrectly inflated.  Furthermore, half of the accidents which occurred on the Strategic Road Network (SRN) in 2019, in which vehicle defects were a contributory factor, were caused by under-inflated, defective or illegal tyres. According to a survey conducted by the road safety organisation, TyreSafe one in five adults admitted to never having checked their tyre tread depth.

Considering that most cars will have been driven less frequently as a result of lockdown restrictions vehicle checks are more important than ever. Anyone who is going to be travelling a long distance should also check that their tyre tread depth meets the legal requirement of at least 1.6mm and that their vehicle’s fluids are at the correct levels as well as checking their tyre pressure.

During the pandemic driving standards have fallen. Citizens have felt safer in their cars. At the same time attractive leasing deals and generically expensive Public transport in this country has inevitably resulted in increased pressure on the total network of facilities available to motorists. Disabled facilities have suffered. With more businesses and organisations suffering sis government support runs out the situation will get worse. Finally impatience, aggression and lack of curtesy is more prevalent making the situation worse.

CARAVAN TYRES: There is also an issue around caravans being towed with wrongly inflated and out of date tyres. The Camping and Caravanning Club recommends that regardless of wear, caravan tyres should be replaced every five years.
