UK EV Market Expanding

Posted in General News on Thursday, May 6th, 2021

The UK has surpassed France to become the second biggest electric vehicle (EV) market in Europe due to a rise in demand for zero emissions vehicles. An estimated 31,800 electric vehicles were sold in the first three months of this year which is 1,300 more than France according to analysis conducted by the independent automotive expert Matthias Schmidt. Battery powered EVs made up 7.5% of vehicle sales in the first three months of 2021 almost double the market share when compared to the same period last year. This data is taken from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Regardless of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic 2020 was the first year that European car makers sold more than 500,000 EVs. This figure is expected to double to 1 million this year. Germany remains the largest single market for battery powered EVs in Europe with 64,700 sales in the first quarter of this year. Matthias Schmidt said: “The UK is likely to remain the number two European BEV (battery electric vehicle) market this year, albeit a long way behind market leader Germany, which manufacturers are relying on to meet European-wide targets thanks to the generous incentives on offer there.”
