E10 Petrol to be Introduced

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that it will be introducing a more environmentally friendly grade of petrol to the UK’s fuel stations this year. This new grade of petrol is referred to as E10 petrol because it contains 10% bioethanol. The current petrol grade dispensed at UK petrol stations, E5, only contains 5% bioethanol. It has been reported that the introduction of E10 petrol will help reduce the nation’s carbon emissions to such an extent that it will be the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road.

All cars built after 2011 will be able to run on E10 petrol, but the government is well aware that an estimated 700,000 vehicles in the UK will not be capable of running on this fuel. Therefore, the government will make sure that E5 fuel remains available at all fuel stations which supply two or more grades of fuel. However, it will be available as the higher octane ‘Super‘ grade option, while E10 fuel will be available as the standard grade option. To help the public adjust to this change the DfT has published guidance for motorists on E10 petrol and developed an online E10 vehicle compatibility checker.
