Share your Views on Electric Vehicles

Posted in General News on Tuesday, February 16th, 2021

DMUK is working on the Equal EV project with our corporate members Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and Connected Kerb to conduct vital research into disabled motorists' views on the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). This information is a key part of making sure that disabled motorists don’t get left behind when the petrol and diesel ban comes into effect. SSEN is looking to interview more disabled motorists who have experience of using EVs, those who are already considering making the transition and those who are very concerned about switching to EVs. These interviews can either be conducted by email or telephone. If you would be willing to be interviewed on this subject, please contact the office stating your name and preferred method of contact and we will pass your information on. SSEN has already released a survey to find out about disabled motorists views on EVs and this can be completed here

@Brian Bremer Same here with a hoist and need of a loading space to handle a fully assembled pavement scooter. Makes me laugh when I see folk, even non-disabled people who should know better and non-disabled drivers, who say there’s loads of cars on Motability that you can get a pavement scooter in the boot and carry passengers and of course that’s true if you break the scooter down into 5 pieces but a lot of us can’t do that believe it not, might be because we are disabled but fine I’m sure if you have a helper with you 24/7. Doesn’t help seeing loads of adverts on TV of perfectly heathy folk loading fold away £2,500 scooters into small cars giving the impression of how wonderful it is to be rich and disabled. There’s very few fossil fuel car’s no matter EV’s for me that fits my disability on the scheme now and most others are due to be withdrawn then were left with large EV’s with Range Rover AP prices. Still not to worry I’m sure the 35p raise in this years PIP rate will cover the cost of EV’s AP’s. LOL.

I would have no problem with charging at home as I have a secure private drive. My concern is how I could manage driving on the continent, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. If at any time in the future compatible charging points are installed in this country and abroad I would consider switching to an electric car. I will at some point have to switch to a hybrid vehicle, possibly at the end of my current lease.

As a Motability customer, there is currently no way I and probably many like myself, could possibly afford the massive cost, let alone that we would have to pay extortionate advance payments to Motability. The range of so called “affordable” are totally unsuitable to my needs, ie, no way to fit a hoist or load a powered scooter. But as with all crazy schemes, Disabled people fall to the bottom of Government interest. I doubt Disability associations were even Consulted to assess the impact of removing the Petrol/Diesel options for our sector of motorists.

We have changed our Motability car from a diesel to a hybrid petrol. We would have loved an Electric Vehicle but as we live in Birmingham and my family live in Kent, 190 miles each way it would take two days each way instead of the normal 3½hrs as we would need to charge the vehicle each way... Electric cars are the way forward but when the batteries give more milage.

I already use anEV which I charge up about once a week using off-peak electricity. My milage is roughly 3000 miles per annum. I bought it mid-June 2020. I chose anEV with a 240 mile range. It is a direct replacement for the same make and model I had for 10 years as a diesel version.

I am a wheelchair user, and use a WAV. I feel that electric cars are the future, and would not like to be left out when the compulsory change arrives. I would love to travel in an electric vehicle.

I am currently looking for a Motability car that can get a hoist fitted for my (folding) scooter. My current vehicle is ideal, but no longer on the Motability scheme. Being only 4’10”, with Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis, some larger cars are too difficult for me get into, never mind to drive! I have been spoiled with my current BMW Gran Tourer. The power closing boot is a must, but not always available ….. then there’s the issue of the whereabouts of the battery in electric cars. I WANT an electric car, I could charge it at home, but struggling to find one that I can get a hoist fitted, with the automatic boot closing system. Any ideas.
