'Don't be a Space Invader' Campaign Continues

Posted in General News on Thursday, September 17th, 2020

Highways England’s campaign against tailgating entitled ‘Don’t be a Space Invader’ is now entering its third phase. This phase will be running until 30th October 2020 and the aim is to make tailgating as socially unacceptable as drink driving or using a mobile phone while driving. Tailgating is a serious problem on the nation’s motorways and major A-roads as it has a negative impact on both driver safety and the quality of the motoring experience. Tailgating is a contributing factor in 1 in 8 fatal incidents that occur on the strategic road network (SRN) and 134 people were killed or seriously injured because of tailgating in 2018 alone.

When holding focus groups and conducting surveys on the subject Highways England found that when people experience tailgating, they feel under pressure, angry, irritated, and/or intimidated and more likely to make an error. Bearing all of this in mind, the mantra of this campaign is ‘don’t be a space invader. Stay safe, stay back.’ It is crucial to maintain a safe distance from the car in front.
