Effective Blue Badge Enforcement Continues in Bromley

Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs) working in the London borough of Bromley have recently prosecuted 11 motorists and one vehicle owner for offences relating to Blue Badge misuse and abuse.  These 12 individuals have been ordered to pay fines totalling £4,352 for a range of offences including; using a counterfeit badge, displaying badges that had been cancelled due to loss or theft, using badges that had belonged to individuals who have passed away and using badges when the holder wasn’t present. A vehicle owner was also prosecuted for failing to provide information relating to the identity of a driver who was suspected of misusing a child’s Blue Badge.   Bromley’s Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Enforcement, Kate Lymer, said: “It seems that drivers who knowingly abuse the scheme either don’t realise or don’t care about the impact their actions are having on those with genuine disabilities or health conditions and it’s shameful that in many cases, the driver is related to the badge holder. I cannot stress strongly enough that Blue Badge scheme abuse will not be tolerated because of the serious effects it has on the everyday lives of genuine badge holders. If you want to avoid a criminal conviction, only use the badge in accordance with the scheme rules, it’s as simple as that.”

The London borough of Bromley has previously been honoured at the DMUK Awards because of the quality of their Blue Badge enforcement and we are very pleased to see that they are continuing to make a concerted effort to tackle Blue Badge misuse and abuse.  Blue Badge enforcement plays a vital role in upholding the integrity of the scheme and we hope that the local authorities around the UK who aren’t doing all they can to enforce the scheme at the moment take note of this and follow this example going forward.
