AccessAble to Assess Accessibility of Motorway Service Areas

Posted in General News on Wednesday, May 6th, 2020

The providers of accessibility information AccessAble, who are also DMUK corporate members, have been awarded the contract by Highways England (HE) to conduct disability access surveys at all the motorway service areas in England. The firm aims to complete these surveys by the end of the year (depending on the COVID-19 lock down measures) and then the information will be made available to the public in the form of detailed Access Guides from January 2021. These Access Guides will also be available via a mobile app and HE hopes that they will enable motorists to plan their journeys more effectively as they will know where they will be able to take rest breaks along their route.

AccessAble will also be forming reports based on their surveys  to advise the motorway service area operators on how the accessibility of their premises can be improved.

Unfortunately due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic AccessAble is unable to send their surveyors out to the motorway service areas at this time. However, the firm has put plans in place to ensure they use the lock down period effectively. For the time being AccessAble will be developing the accessibility criteria which their surveyors will use to asses each service station and coming to an agreement on the specific information that will be included in the Access Guides. If you would like to find out more information about AccessAble and view the Access Guides which are currently available please visit www.accessable.co.uk. The AccessAble App is also available to download on Google Play and the App Store.
