NAO Investigates Links Between the Welfare System and Mental Health

Posted in General News on Friday, November 1st, 2019

The National Audit Office (NAO) will be investigating the way that the government monitors the number of suicide cases among benefit claimants. The NAO has stated that it will be calling on the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to show the information that it holds relating to the issue after government ministers refused to provide an MP with the figures in response to a written request. The announcement of this investigation comes after a number of Disabled Persons’ Organisations (DPOs) raised concerns about the links between the reforms to the welfare system and a decline in mental health. Frank Field, Chair of the Work and Pensions Committee originally requested the figures and in his subsequent letter to the NAO he wrote: “I struggle to believe that, given the time it must take to put together evidence for inquests, attend court hearings, and internally review the decisions, that there is no record of such.”
