One third of filling stations charging £2 per litre for diesel

Posted in News on Thursday, October 1st, 2026

Around one third of filling stations are charging £2 or more per litre for diesel, according to analysis by the AA using Government Fuel Finder data.

The AA says 2,577 of approximately 8,000 listed filling stations were charging at least £2 per litre. Many of the highest prices are at motorway and major route forecourts, but drivers can still find significant differences between nearby stations.

The Government’s Fuel Finder scheme provides current fuel prices and requires forecourts to update prices within 30 minutes of a change, allowing motorists to compare prices through participating apps and websites.

AA President Edmund King is advising motorists to shop around, with differences of six pence or more per litre possible between nearby garages.

Drivers can also reduce fuel use by lowering their speed, driving smoothly, checking tyre pressures and removing unnecessary weight from their vehicles. Combining journeys and avoiding unnecessary short trips can also help reduce fuel consumption.

The AA says changing driving style and reducing speed can save fuel, while the current high prices are also prompting more drivers to consider electric vehicles.

For motorists looking to keep costs down, checking fuel prices before setting out and planning journeys carefully could make a noticeable difference.
