24/7 Free Bus Travel for Disabled Pass Holders

Posted in News on Wednesday, September 9th, 2026

Eligible disabled people across England will soon enjoy free bus travel all day, every day. The Prime Minister announced on Tuesday 18 August that time restrictions on concessionary passes will be permanently lifted starting 1 April 2027.

Currently, disabled bus passes are restricted to weekday travel between 9:30 am and 11:00 pm, unless local authorities fund extensions. Backed by £60 million from the Department for Transport and Department for Work and Pensions, this nation-wide change eliminates the "postcode lottery," providing round-the-clock access to the country's most popular form of public transport.

The policy removes a critical practical barrier to employment, training, and healthcare. Currently, morning commuters are forced to pay out-of-pocket during peak hours. As campaign groups like Scope and Mencap point out, disabled people do not live "off-peak lives."
Alongside a continued £2 single bus fare cap throughout 2027 and £3.5 billion in tailored employment support, this 24/7 pass update delivers vital financial relief. By ensuring reliable, free travel at any hour, the government is helping disabled people stay connected, access opportunities, and live with greater independence.
