The Hidden Cost of Delaying Car Repairs

Posted in News on Wednesday, September 9th, 2026

Rising maintenance costs are forcing drivers into dangerous territory. According to new data from the RAC, one in ten motorists (10%) have driven illegally by skipping their annual MOT or driving on worn-out tyres.

The cost-of-living squeeze is hitting younger drivers hardest. A quarter of drivers under 25, alongside 21% of those aged 25 to 44, admit to delaying essential repairs due to financial pressure, compared to just 5% of drivers aged 65 and over. Overall, 3% of motorists have deliberately avoided an MOT, while 7% have driven on illegal tyres below the 1.6mm tread depth limit.

With 60% of motorists reporting higher repair costs over the past year, nearly a third now worry about maintaining their vehicles. Meanwhile, surging fuel prices, with a tank of petrol now costing £89 and diesel reaching £100, are pushing household budgets to the brink.
However, postponing maintenance is a false economy that risks safety, fines, and license penalty points. To ease the burden, RAC Mobile Mechanics offer convenient, transparent doorstep servicing for thousands of complex repairs, allowing drivers to spread costs flexibly with options like Klarna. Keeping your car legal and safe doesn't have to break the bank.
