Coalition Calls for Urgent Action on Disability Poverty

The Disability Poverty Campaign Group (DPCG) has written to the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, calling for urgent action to tackle disability poverty and rebuild trust between Disabled people and the Government. 

The coalition, led by Disability Rights UK and Inclusion London, says Disabled households continue to face disproportionately high levels of poverty due to rising living costs, inadequate social security and the additional expenses associated with disability. While recognising the Prime Minister's previous support for Disabled people's rights, the group warns that meaningful, co-produced action is now needed to improve lives. 

In its letter, the DPCG urges the Government to protect disability benefits, fully implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, reform social care, introduce an energy social tariff and improve employment opportunities. It also calls for changes that could affect eligibility for the Motability Scheme to be rejected and for Disabled People's Organisations to be involved in decision making under the principle of "Nothing About Us Without Us." 

The group also asks ministers to challenge misleading narratives about disability and benefits, stressing that disabled people need practical action rather than political rhetoric.
