Flash Charging - BYD advances the EV Charging Infrastructure

While charging infrastructure in the UK continues to improve, many electric vehicle drivers still struggle to find reliable, accessible and genuinely rapid charging facilities when travelling. That could soon change, with BYD confirming plans to bring its groundbreaking Flash Charging technology to the UK as part of a major rollout. Reports suggest the company intends to install between 200 and 300 Flash Charging locations across the UK by the end of 2026, with the network continuing to expand through 2027.

The first UK Flash Charging sites are expected to be located at BYD and Denza dealerships, providing motorists with access to some of the fastest charging technology currently available. BYD has also indicated that the network will expand beyond dealerships to include retail destinations, existing charging hubs and other strategic roadside locations. One of the first installations is expected to be located close to BYD's UK headquarters in Uxbridge, West London, where the technology has already been demonstrated.

The Chinese manufacturer has developed an ultra-fast charging system capable of delivering up to 1,500kW through a single connector when paired with a compatible vehicle. That's up to three times faster than many of today's best rapid chargers. Using an integrated battery storage and power amplification system, BYD says the technology can deliver exceptional charging speeds even where grid capacity is limited.

During UK demonstrations, BYD's Flash Charger charged a compatible vehicle from 10 per cent to 97 per cent in under nine minutes, while a 5 per cent to 70 per cent charge took just five minutes. For motorists making longer journeys, that could make EV charging feel much closer to the experience of refuelling a conventional petrol or diesel vehicle.

For disabled drivers, however, speed is only part of the story. The Flash Charger has been designed with accessibility and ease of use in mind. Its distinctive T-shaped gantry allows vehicles to pull in on either side, while lightweight charging guns are suspended from overhead sliding rails. This significantly reduces the need to lift, drag or manoeuvre heavy charging cables, creating a more convenient charging experience for people with reduced mobility.

The arrival of Flash Charging technology in the UK could represent a significant step forward for EV accessibility. As the network expands from dealership locations into public charging sites across the country, motorists could benefit not only from dramatically reduced charging times but also from facilities that are easier and safer to use.

DMUK CEO, Graham Footer said: "Fast effective charging is a key element of making electric vehicles viable for everyone, but for disabled motorists especially we mustn't forget that the accessibility of charge points is paramount and we will continue to implore charge point manufacturers to follow the guidelines set out in the PAS 1899 standards for accessible parking and charging. The speed of a charger doesn't matter if it isn't accessible."

With hundreds of UK Flash Charging locations planned and the first sites expected to open at dealerships before expanding to other public locations, BYD's rollout will be closely watched by motorists eager to see whether ultra-fast, more accessible charging can finally help remove one of the biggest barriers to EV ownership.
