Handheld Mobile Phone Use Behind the Wheel Reaches Seven-Year High

New research from the RAC has revealed a worrying rise in drivers using handheld mobile phones while behind the wheel, with more motorists admitting to browsing the internet, texting and using social media than at any point since 2018. 

The study found that 15% of drivers now admit to these illegal activities while driving, more than double the 7% recorded in 2021. One in five drivers also confessed to checking messages or notifications, while 12% admitted taking photos or recording videos behind the wheel. 
Particularly concerning is the increase in drivers watching, recording or livestreaming videos while driving. This figure has nearly doubled from 5% in 2024 to 9% in 2026, with more than a quarter of under-25s admitting to the behaviour. 

Younger drivers remain the most likely to engage in dangerous mobile phone use, with many reporting activities such as video calling, posting on social media, and even playing games while driving. 

Despite tougher penalties and increased enforcement measures, concern about handheld phone use among motorists has fallen significantly over the past decade. However, official figures show mobile phone use contributed to 340 road collisions in 2024, including 20 fatal crashes, highlighting the serious risks posed by distracted driving.
