Electric Car Grant Extended

Posted in General News on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025

Drivers looking to switch to electric can now save £1,500 on some of the UK’s most popular models, as Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall join Citroën in the government’s Electric Car Grant (ECG) scheme.

From 9 August 2025, 13 new EVs became eligible, bringing the total to 17 approved models. Discounts are automatically applied at the point of sale, with no paperwork required. To keep the focus on affordability, the grant only applies to cars costing up to £37,000.

Eligible models now include the Renault Alpine A290, Megane, 4, 5 and Scenic, Nissan Micra and Ariya, and the full Vauxhall electric range – from the Corsa to the Grandland. They join the Citroën ë-C3, ë-C4, ë-C5 and ë-Berlingo, which were announced earlier this month.

The ECG is part of a wider £4.5 billion investment to accelerate EV adoption and boost UK industry under the government’s Plan for Change. With upfront costs often seen as the biggest barrier, these discounts aim to make EVs competitive with petrol and diesel models.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the scheme is “backing drivers, putting money back into people’s pockets and creating jobs and growth.”

The RAC’s Simon Williams called the expansion “welcome news” that will speed up the transition to electric motoring, while Carwow reported EV enquiries for sub-£37,000 models jumped 124% in the week after the scheme’s launch.

For manufacturers, the scheme sends a strong signal. Nissan, Vauxhall and Renault chiefs all welcomed the support, with Vauxhall highlighting its UK production at Ellesmere Port and Renault emphasising its mission to “democratise EV ownership.”
