Worse for Wire! Wiring Looms Repaired More Often than Bumpers

Posted in General News on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025

Research from AA Accident Assist has found that wiring looms are now the most frequently repaired component following car crashes. In 2024, almost 99 % of the 14,500 vehicles repaired required new wiring looms to become roadworthy again. In modern vehicles wiring looms connect essential advanced features such as parking sensors, rear cameras, adaptive cruise control and so on. Each repair requires careful recalibration to make sure it is working correctly

Top 10 Parts Repaired After Crashes (2024/25)
  • Wiring looms – 99%
  • Bumper units – 58%
  • Rear bumper crash beams and fixings – 57%
  • Front bumper crash beams and fixings – 32%
  • Door locks, trims and seals – 12%
  • Roof – 12%
  • Hinges for bonnets and doors – 7%
  • Front doors – 7%
  • Rear doors – 5%
  • Lighting units – 3%

When the AA surveyed 10,000 drivers, 36% assumed bumpers were the most regularly repaired, with 27% and 18% pointing to front and rear bumper repairs respectively. Only 1% gave the correct answer. Managing Director of AA Accident Assist, Tim Rankin said; “Fixing a car is more advanced than just replacing parts. With every evolution of vehicle technology comes more sophisticated and high-tech repairs. Wiring looms might seem innocuous, but the wires do more than just carry power around the car. The wires help run fundamental safety features around the car, such as images, speed data and radar technology. With more semi-autonomous driving assistance packages being placed on cars as standard, repairers are being tasked to fix and calibrate, as opposed to simply replace and fit. As Accident Assist celebrates its fifth anniversary, we are gathering more insight into how and why people crash on our roads. From tailgating to being distracted, there are a wide range of reasons why collisions continue to happen."

At 84 I am well into the Govts sight for removing my driving licence. I am a retired Police Officer who was although a long time ago fortunate enough to have had police driver training. I still try and remember all that I was taught. We have just acquired new neighbours and She is a driving instructor. I spoke to her about her driving along the pavement and was horrifie d to be told it was OK. She had looked it up. I pointed out that the Highway Code and UK Govt websites were the place to look. Our friend Google raised its ugly head. One area that really concerns me is traffic joining a major road. Its now the norm it seems to just indicate right and charge out irrespective of traffic on the main carriageway. The dotted white line has no meaning!!!!Today I followed an EV being driven as if on the Race Track. Overtook on a left hand bend so much so that the speed indicator at the side of the road flashed RED I have never seen one do that before. This driver all through Town had been less than a cars length behind the car being followed. Whilst I appreciate there is a lack of police presence, why is not more use made of the pletherer of road side cameras that overlook junctions on main roads. Another concern is that although I do not like it, there is a sticker in the rear window of our Motability Peugeot 2008 that shows the disabled badge and a request to leave enough room for a scooter to be unloaded ( there is a hoist in the back of the car) this is almost like a red rag to a bull attitude by some drivers mainly young who will persist in doing everything to harass me. No one thing I am not is a doddering old pensioner. Sorry I do suffer with verbal Diarrhoea. My marks at driving school were 96% on my drive ( I didn't use the handbarke on a slight inlcine) and 100% on my HIghway Code/ awareness test. (car) Although I did not need it I was also sent on a M/C course, where for three weeks I was either the leader or tail end charlie to assist the Instructor. There I had a clean sweep of a 100% (m/c) and was even up to being granted a Traffic M/C permit. if I wanted to apply for traffic. Sorry I also suffer with PTSD. Thansk for reading this
