The O.A. Denly Memorial Award

Sponsored by Brig-Ayd

This is the headline award and is named after “Denny” Denly one of our charity founders who sadly died in 2010. Paralysed by polio whilst serving in the Royal Navy, Denny went on to astonish the world by driving his “Argson Invalid Carriage” across the Alps. He was a life-long campaigner for the rights of disabled people and a keen sportsman.

This award will recognise a disabled person who, like Denny, has taken on a truly inspiring challenge. Perhaps you know someone who has undertaken a similarly inspiring adventure, or you have been inspired by their personal campaigning and courage.  Nominees for this award should be people who live their life to the full, whatever the circumstances.

This award aims to recognise a disabled person under the age of 25 who is an outstanding achiever. You might know/or be a young person who has taken on an inspiring challenge or has achieved something thought to be impossible for them. This award will go to a young person who does not let their disability stop them achieving and over comes obstacles.

Best Driving Instructor Award

Learning to drive can be a daunting task for anybody. However, if you have a disability it can be particularly difficult – just finding an instructor to teach you can be a big task in itself.  This new category recognises a driving instructor who has a passion for teaching disabled people to drive and has gone above and beyond to make sure they obtain their licence.

Shopping Centre Experience Award

Shopping Centres are increasingly the more convenient way to shop. We are looking for the shopping centre which provides the best experience for disabled people. Is the car park accessible? Do they enforce the Blue Badge scheme? Is their Shop Mobility excellent? Can you access the shops without any problems? If you’ve had a particularly good experience at a shopping Centre we want to hear from you.

If you are nominating your own Shopping Centre for this award, please provide specific evidence of relevant staff training and your customer service achievements in this area.

Your application could also include examples of how you enforce the Blue Badge scheme and ensure it is not being abused by non-disabled people.

This category is also open to operators/local authorities who manage on-street parking and we are particularly interested to hear new and innovative ways in which Blue Badge abuse is being managed.
