Come and Have Go Day – Disability Sports

Have you been inspired by hype of the Paralympics? Want to have a go at some different sports?

Come and Have a Go Day is the chance to try a range of sports that you might not have participated in before. The event is aimed at all ages and disabilities. Sports include; Boccia, Football, Cricket, Archery, Wheelchair Basketball, Table Tennis, Wheelchair Badminton, and more.

The event takes place at Derby College, The Johnson Building, Locomotive Way, Pride Park, DE24 8PU on Sunday 24th June.

DLA reform and PIP – another consultation

The government has launched yet another consultation on Personal Independence Payment. This time the consultation seeks views on the government’s proposals on some of the benefit rules underpinning Personal Independence Payment, Disability Living Allowance, Carer’s Allowance and Attendance Allowance. Stop Blue Badge Abuse

It’s now three months since the new style Blue Badge was introduced. At the moment there are very few of these new badges in circulation as they are being bought in gradually over the next three years as people’s badges expire. However, in three years’ time old badges will be a thing of the past and every badge will have a unique identifying number which parking attendants can use to get information about the user from wherever the badge was issued. The new style badge will also stop people altering the dates, using badges that have been reported as stolen and fakes. Continue reading »


Blue Badge Abuse

Members will have seen, in the April issue of Disabled Motoring magazine, Helen Dolphin spending the day with the Blue Badge fraud investigators in Lambeth. She saw first hand how a local authority is policing the Blue Badge Scheme. In this article she asked you to write to your local MP to ask them what they are doing to tackle Blue Badge abuse and to explain why it is so important that the issue is addressed.

Channel 4 – No Go Britain

Channel 4 News are running a series of reports entitled ‘No Go Britain’, investigating the challenges that disabled people face when using public transport. The first of these reports has already been aired, but Channel 4 suggest this has just scratched the surface, so they are looking for more contributions.

In order to get a fuller picture, they are looking for disabled people to send them their experiences, both good and bad, of travelling on public transport in Britain. You can send in your comments via the ‘No Go Britain’ facebook page on Twitter, using the hash tag #nogobritain. Alternatively, you can upload a video response to their You Tube site.

Disabled Motoring UK requires a Administratior/Information Officer to help with the running of the charity. This position would ideally suit someone with good written and IT skills that is looking to work in the charity sector.

This role cover a variety of different activities including maintaining the charity’s membership database, communicating with members and the general public by phone, email and letter and attending roadshows and events accross the UK which may necessitate some overnight stays away.

Candidates will need to be highly organised, have good communications skills, be flexible and have a positive attitude. Candidates will be fully computer literate with excellent MS Office skills. Experience of operating databases and a full driving licence is desirable.

Salary – £18,500 per annum
33 days annual holiday entitlement which includes public/bank holidays
Probationary period – 6 months
Contributory pension scheme after completion of probationary period.
35 hrs/week from 9.00am to 5.00pm with 1 hour lunch break (flexibility required to fit in with external meetings)
